Chapin closed another successful girls tennis season with a 13-4 overall record and an 8-2 mark in Region 4-3A play. The Eagles qualified for the Class 3A state playoffs, and were eliminated in the first round by J.L. Mann.
“It was another good season,” said coach John Rogers.
“We closed the gap on A.C. Flora in our region a little bit this season after they steamrolled us last year. We were also very competitive against state runner-up J.L. Mann in the playoffs.”
Seventh-grader Savanna Fuller played very well at No. 1 singles this fall, compiling a 10-5 record. The rest of the singles starters included senior Jenna Taylor (12-4 at No. 2), senior Jordan Brodway (13-3 at No. 3), senior Jayde Corley (11-5 at No. 4) and eighth-grader Savannah Melonas (14-3 at No. 5). Fuller and Broadway were 4-2 when needed at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Kayla Gearhart and senior Abby Elam went 13-3 as the main doubles team.
“We lose four outstanding senior starters and they will be hard to replace,” said Rogers, looking ahead to 2010.
“We’re going to be very young with no seniors on the team.”
