With 10 lettermen in tow, including two starters, the Dreher boys basketball team enters the 2009-10 season with high hopes. The Blue Devils are coming off 19-6 season that included a 10-0 run through Region 5-3A and a two-round stay in the Class 3A state playoffs.
“Expectations are high heading in to the 2009-10 season,” said coach Jon Richards.
“We lack size but we have several perimeter marksmen, so we’ll be looking to spread the floor on offense and extend the defense the length of the floor. Balanced scoring can once again be expected of this team that is high on character and teamwork.”
The rest of the region coaches expect the Blue Devils to reign supreme again this winter. In fact, Dreher was the unanimous preseason pick to finish first once more.
The top returning players include 6-4 senior wing Chris Brown (14 ppg, 45% from 3-point range), 6-1 junior guard Quayshun Hawkins (13 ppg, 40% from 3-point range) and 6-1 senior guard Dominic Boyd, a shutdown defensive player.
Other veteran players back for another go are senior wing James Whitehead, Derrick Halback, the projected starter at point guard, and guard Tyler Harris.
The Blue Devils also excel in the classroom. The returning players sport a combined 3.65 GPA.
