Stuart Hope’s championship performance at 119 paced a solid, fourth-place performance by the Chapin wrestling team at last weekend’s Palmetto State Classic tournament at Irmo. Hope, last season 3A 103 state champion and a two-time state qualifier, closed a 4-0 tournament showing with a 5-4 decision over Fort Dorchester’s Marquise Robinson in the 119 finale.
Nate Polly, Scott Swindell, Chandler Owens, Chase Owens, Seth Stevens and Brandon Owens also came away with place finishes as the Eagles, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A, finished fourth in the PSC final team standings with 148.5 points, just 3.5 points behind top Midlands 3A rival Lugoff-Elgin.
Polly, the state runner-up at 125 a year ago and a two-time state place finisher, lost 8-5 in the PSC 135 title bout to Nation Ford’s Stewart Snodgrass. Polly had two win on the way to the finals.
Swindell went 3-1 at 152, losing to Fort Dorchester star Seiji Borja in the championship round. Borja, a two-time state champion, won by a comfortable 14-7 margin.
Otherwise, Chandler Owens went 4-2 and finished fourth at 103, Owens’s 4-1 showing netted his a third-place finsh at 140. Stevens and Brandon Owens both turned in 4-2, fourth-place efforts at 160 and 189, respectively.
