Richland Northeast continued its impressive early season run with a 69-58 road win at Lexington on Friday night in the Region 5-4A boys basketball opener for both teams.
The Cavaliers improved to 4-1, while the defending region champion Wildcats suffered their first setback in eight outings.
RNE got off to a fast start with the hot shooting of Travis Hammonds and Jarred Guest. Hammonds finished with 26 points, and Guest finished with 15. Hammonds’ game-high total featured six 3-pointers. Ryan Quarles chipped in 12 points. The Cavalier defense frustrated the Wildcats much of the night.
Lexington closed the gap several times in the second half after falling into a 36-20 hole in the opening 16 minutes, only to see RNE answer every run.
David Burns was the lone Wildcats double-digit producer with 16 points.
RNE continues region play Tuesday at home against White Knoll, while Lexington travels to Aiken.
