Young Gilbert team grabs 2nd at CN event

Gilbert’s Class 2A fourth-ranked wrestling team finished second at the Cardinal Holiday Classic tournament last weekend at Cardinal Newman.

The Indians made a run at host Cardinal Newman for the tournament championship, but came up a bit short against the defending SCISA champions. CN claimed first place with 186 points, with Gilbert closing with 175 points.

“I was really pleased with the way we competed as a whole, especially with us being so young overall,” said Tribe coach Tracy Gooding.

“With only three seniors in the lineup, I hope the performance on Saturday will go along way in giving our guys some confidence the remainder of the year.”

Drew Neff (160), David Amick (125) and Matt Risinger (135) all went 3-0 on the way to individual championships. Austin Amick (130) Justin Miller (145) and Pat McGee (285) all finished with 2-1 records. Amick and Miller were second-place finishers, while McGee claimed a consolation title. Chris Dyer was 2-2 and placed fourth at 140.
