Cavaliers beat Vance, claim consolation prize

Richland Northeast defeated Vance (N.C.) 57-49 on Tuesday to earn third place in Bracket I at the Chick-fil-A Classic.

The Cavaliers (7-2) continued their impressive play early in the first month of the season by going 2-1 at their own elite tournament. RNE never trailed after a layup by Altoney Germany off a pass by Chris Branch staked the Cavs to a 28-27 lead at 1:12 of the first half.

But RNE did not put the tough Cougars away until the game’s final two and a half minutes. Vance was within 46-42 with 3:18 to go before the Cavaliers finally delivered the knock out blow on consecutive scores by Jarred Guest and Donald Tention. Guest’s jumper upped the RNE lead to 48-42 with 2:29 to go, then Tention scored on a fast break with 1:50 left, thanks to a rebound and outlet pass by Quinn Martin. The Cavs iced it from there at the free-throw line, going 7-for-8 at the stripe down the stretch. Tention was a perfect 4-for-4 in crunch time.

Guest had game high totals in points (21) and rebounds (8) to lead the way for RNE. Tention finished with 11 points, and Martin chipped in five points, three boards and four assists.
