Four Midlands teams prevailed in the first round of the Midas Highlander Classic basketball tournament at Heathwood Hall.
Irmo was the only area girls team to survive first-round testing, defeating Charlotte Country Day 42-33 behind Sarah Green (16 points) and Brook McCants (12). The defending tournament champion Yellow Jackets square off against Wilson Hall in the semifinals today at 2 p.m. The survivor will play either Pinewood Prep or Porter-Gaud in Wednesday’s championship game at 5 p.m.
On the boys side, defending Midas champion Irmo opened with a 68-41 rout of Charlotte County Day. Jordan Roper’s 18 points led the Yellow Jackets expansive scoring parade. A total of 14 players chipped in points in the runaway win. Irmo meets Williston-Elko in one semifinal game today at 3 p.m.
In the other boys semifinal contest, host Heathwood Hall takes on Blythewood at 6:30 p.m. The Highlanders improved to 7-1 with a 51-40 win over struggling Brookland-Cayce, which dropped to 1-7. Corey Littlejohn and Mac Whalen set the tone for Heathwood Wood Hall, scoring 18 and 15 points, respectively. Jonathan Rumph tallied 16 for the Bearcats. Blythewood was a 43-37 winner over Porter-Gaud in first-round play.
