Rebels itching to get back in action

Mid-Carolina’s boys basketball team will be rather busy when it returns to action next week in the wake of a 16-day holiday break.

The Rebels (6-2) have non-region road games on tap against Union County (Jan. 5) and Emerald (Jan. 6) before opening Region 3-2A play on Jan. 8 at home against Strom Thurmond.

M-C closed out the December portion of the 2009-10 season with a championship run at its own holiday tournament. The Rebels opened the four-team, two-day affair with a 63-49 win over Ashley Hall, and claimed the title the following day (Dec. 19) by downing Tasmania NITCP, a traveling team from Australia, 58-42.

Tournament MVP C.J. Edwards scored 14 points in the title game, while Calvin Herbert had 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Edwards tallied 19 points vs. Ashley Ridge. Herbert and Krishawn Holley were named to the all-tournament team. Holley tallied 15 points vs. Ashley Ridge and chipped in eight points, four boards, two assists and two steals in the championship game.

To date, Herbert is averaging 14.3 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game. Edwards is at 11.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and leads the team with 11 3-point field goals. Holley and Hubert Wicker also have made solid contributions to the team’s early success. Holley is averaging 7.9 points and 7.3 rebounds, while Wicker is at 5.6 ppg and leads the club in assists at 4.1 per game.
