Viking matmen dominate Lancaster

Spring Valley picked up its first Region 4-4A wrestling win on Tuesday, breezing by Lancaster 57-18. In the process, the Vikings, now 1-1 in region matters, avenged a bitter three-point loss to the Bruins a year ago.

“Our boys had a very productive night,: said coach Rob Wells.

“Lancaster was one of those teams I thought we could have beaten last year, but lost. Recently, several of our wrestlers dropped down in weight. Although it calls for a great amount of sacrifice on the part of our young men, it’s made us a tougher team. We continue to get great leadership from Nate Weaver and Chris Johnson, and our kids are starting to respond.”

Spring Valley’s romp featured pins by Denzel Hart (119), Johnson (135), Matt Evans (145), Hugo Rodriguez (152), Justin Hennix (171) and John Carter (189). Kyle Stiffler (103), Pedro Martinez (130) and Weaver (215) came away with three-point decisions.

Evans trailed in the first period before turning the tables in the second. Rodriguez’s pin came in his varsity debut at 152.

Weaver and Antonio Williams (140) are the highest ranked Vikings individually. Both stand at No. 7 in their respective weight classes in the latest rankings released by scmat.com. Stiffler is 11th at 103.
