The Heathwood Hall boys basketball team is off to a 9-2 start after their 52-47 win at Wilson Hall on Tuesday. The Highlanders open SCISA Region 1-3A play on Friday at Ben Lippen.
The Highlanders have been more consistent on the defensive end this season giving up an average of 46.7 points a game, while scoring 55.6 a game. The Highlanders two losses have come at the hands for Class 4A SCHSL team Fort Dorchester and Blythewood. The Highlanders lost to Fort Dorchester in the Porter-Gaud Holiday Classic, but finished with a 3-1 record in the tournament. The loss to Blythewood came in the Highlanders’ own Midas Highlander Classic. The Highlanders finished with a 2-1 record in their tournament. Corey Littlejohn and Mac Whalen were both selected to the all-tournament Team.
On the offensive end, junior Corey Littlejohn leads the team with a 22.5-points scoring average. He is also averaging 8.9 rebounds per game along with 2.9 assists and 2.7 steals per game. Litttlejohn reached the 1000-point mark for his career against James Island in the Porter-Gaud Holiday Classic on Dec. 21.
Senior Mac Whalen is second in scoring with an average of 11.7 points per game, and stands at 5.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Senior Morgan Whalen is the leading assist man on the team (3.0), and is the team’s defensive stopper, always covering the opposing team’s best offensive player.
Rounding out the starting five are senior Joseph English and sophomore Joseph James. English is averaging 4.9 ppg and 3.9 rpg, while James is at 5.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg and 2.3 assists.
Seniors Andrew Hickman, Taylor Zurcher and Belton Amaker have been very valuable coming off the bench for the Highlanders.
