Mid-Carolina stayed in contention for the Region 3-2A boys basketball championship by completing a 2-0 week with a 58-52 win over Gilbert on Friday.
The Rebels (11-7 overall) stand at 5-3 in conference matters, tied for second place with Strom Thurmond one game behind front-running Newberry. The region championship race will have a dramatic conclusion next week. M-C travels to Batesburg-Leesville on Tuesday, and hosts Newberry on Thursday in the regular-season finale. Strom Thurmond and Newberry clash on Tuesday.
M-C took control vs. Gilbert with a 23-13 run in the second quarter, and held of the scrappy Indians the rest of the way.
Krishawn Holley. Calvin Herbert, Jacobi Boyd and Hubert Wicker had solid outings for the Rebels. Holley finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Herbert had another double-double – 11 points, 12 rebounds. Boyd tallied 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting from 3-point range. Wicker chipped in eight points and seven assists, and helped put the verdict on ice by going 5-for-6 at the free-thrown line in the fourth quarter.
