Vikings sweep at South Pointe

Spring Valley secured the No. 1 playoff seed in Region 4-4A girls basketball on Friday with a 65-32 romp at South Pointe. The Vikings (20-2, 8-0) can wrap up the outright region championship with a win Tuesday at Rock Hill against the last-place Bearcats.

Asia Dozier had a game high 26 points to go along with three assists and six steals. Xylina McDaniel was her usual productive self with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

In the nightcap the Spring Valley boys (9-12, 3-5) completed the sweep and remained in contention for a playoff spot by downing the Stallions 65-63 in overtime. The Vikings currently stand in fifth place in the region a half game behind South Points (3-4) entering the final two games of the season.

Ultimately, the difference was SV’s 3-point shooting. The Vikings canned eight bonus bombs, five from Devante Brooks who finished with 18 points. Meanwhile, Chris Favor tallied a game high 21 points and Jonathan Garrett fired in 16.
