Demons rally, advance to Upper State title match

Top-ranked Lugoff-Elgin advanced to the Class 3A Upper State wrestling championship match with a come-from-behind 34-24 win over visiting West-Oak in second-round action on Monday.

The Demons (19-2) host third-ranked, Region 4-3A archrival Chapin on Wednesday at 7 p.m. with a berth in Saturday’s state finals on the line.

L-E survived the Warriors upset bid by winning the final three bouts of the match. Will Connell’s pin at 171 put the Demons in front 25-24, Max Fowler followed with a win at 189 and Theo Shepard iced the verdict with a pin at 215.

Jonathan McManus (major decision at 285), Chris Renfroe (decision at 112), Tony Murphy (pin at 125), Dreshon Wood (decision at 130) and Will Myers (decision at 152) accounted for the rest of the Demons points.

The rematch with third-ranked Chapin should be classic. L-E prevailed 33-29 to clinch the Region 4-3A championship just prior to the start of the playoffs.
