The South Carolina High School League Class 4A state basketball playoffs begin on Tuesday, but there is still plenty of drama to be played out on the Region 5-4A stage tonight.
The key doubleheader features Irmo at Dutch Fork. The Irmo boys enter the game tied for first place with archrival Lexington at 10-3. The Irmo girls can wrap up the outright region championship with a win over the Silver Foxes. If Dutch Fork prevails, the Foxes, Irmo and North Augusta will share the championship.
The Dutch Fork and Richland Northeast boys teams have made the cut, but the respective seed positions are far from settled.
Lexington travels to face White Knoll. The Wildcats boys will be looking to avenge a 51-44 loss to the Timberwolves, who are out of the playoff mix no matter the outcome tonight. The Lexington girls enter the game with the last-place T-Wolves at 6-7 in the region and tied for fifth place with Orangeburg-Wilkinson, a half game behind fourth Aiken. If the Wildcats and O-W prevail tonight, there will be a three-way tie for fourth place and two teams will advance to the playoffs. If Lexington and O-W both lose, the Bruins get the nod for the fifth and final playoff spot in the region thanks to a conference sweep of the Wildcats. O-W, which is looking to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time in 28 years, plays at Richland NE.
