SCISA hoop playoffs start this weekend

The SCIA state basketball tournament begins this weekend at various first-round sites before shifting to Sumter next week.

Four Midlands girls teams start play on Friday. Heathwood Hall (13-10), the top seed among Midlands entries, faces Hilton Head Christian at 6:30 p.m. at home. Ben Lippen (9-14) draws Porter-Gaud at 8 p.m. at Heathwood Hall. Hammond plays Orangeburg Prep at 8 p.m. at OP. Cardinal Newman (9-12) takes on defending state champion Pinewood Prep at 8 p.m. at Porter-Gaud.

The boys tournament begins on Saturday. Heathwood Hall (20-5) hosts Florence Christian at 2:30 p.m. Ben Lippen (18-8) squares off against Northwood Academy at 2:30 p.m. at Wilson Hall. Hammond opens at Wilson Hall at 4 p.m. Cardinal Newman travels to Porter-Gaud to face four-time defending SCISA champion Pinewood Prep at 5:30 p.m.

Heathwood’s Mac Whalen and Corey Littlejohn recently tallied their 1,000th career point. Whalen, a senior guard, is averaging 10.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists a game. Littlejohn, a junior forward, is averaging 21.4 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists.
