Heathwood girls ousted in SCISA semis

SUMTER -- Hilton Head Prep ended Heathwood Hall’s girls basketball season on Friday, defeating the Highlanders 56-44 in the semifinals of the SCISA Class 3A state tournament at Sumter Exhibition Center.

The Dolphins (29-3) broke the game open in the second quarter with a turnover-fueled 10-2 run that increased their lead to 30-18 with 3:32 remaining in the first half. HHP kept the double-digit advantage the rest of the way.

Jill Brunori led the Dolphins with 18 points, sister Kate Brunori tallied 14 and Becky Derone hit 11 as HHP earned the right to compete for its seventh state championship under coach Bob Sulek. Pinewood Prep ended the Dolphins four-year reign last season.

Eighth-grade forward A’ja Wilson scored a game high 22 points for the Heathwood Hall, which finished with a 15-11 record under first-year coach John O’Cain.
