Wrap: Cardinal Newman wrestling

The Cardinal Newman wrestling program extended its domination of the SCISA scene this season, going 17-4 and winning its second straight independent schools championship.

The Cardinals' only dual match setbacks came against public school teams Gilbert (2), Columbia and Class 3A state champion Lugoff-Elgin.

“I was very proud of our team this season,” said coach Eric Goff.

“We started the season facing a lot of adversity, but our younger guys really rallied around some good senior leadership. This team never ceased to surprise me. They had a real desire to win, and would not let anything stand in their way.

Returning starters for next year will be Kirol, McCarter, Hayes, Touma, Heckart, Egan, Palevich, Maitland, Wilson, and Solomon. We are going to have a good core set of starters coming back this year, and we have some young guys already chomping at the bit to get on the mat. Im looking forward to seeing what the young ones have in store.

Individually, Nathan Hayes (18-5 at 119), Thomas Touma (10-1 at 125), Conor Egan (20-6 at 135), Nick Palevich (24-4 at 152), Kyle Maitland (10-5 at 160) and Billy Solomon (23-4 at 189) emerged as state champions.

Cole McCarter (12-2 at 112), Seth Heckart (12-5 at 130) and Alex Geurin (24-4 at 140), Jake Wilson (23-4 at 171), Jack Garrick (21-6 at 215) and David Richardson (14-5 at 285) all finished second at the individual state tournament.

Christian Kirol (19-7 at 103) and Richard Hodaly (12-10 at 145) were consolation champions.

Kirol, McCarter, Hayes, Touma, Heckart, Egan, Palevich, Maitland, Wilson, and Solomon are all expected to return next season as the Cardinals shoot for three in a row.

“We are going to have a good core set of starters coming back next year, and we have some young guys already chomping at the bit to get on the mat,” said Goff. “I’m looking forward to seeing what the young ones have in store.”
