O'Connor saves Sumter show at state

Sumter heavyweight Josh O’Connor was the entire Gamecocks show at the lass 4A state wrestling tournament last weekend in Rock Hill.

The sophomore standout was the only Sumter entry to have success whatsoever at the season finale. O’Connor went 3-1 in his first state tournament experience to claim third place at 285 pounds, capping a 53-5 season.

O’Connor bagged the consolation championship the hard way, scoring three wins in the consolation bracket after dropping his first round match to John Michael Pritchett of Wren. Ironically, O’Connor beat Pritchett 3-1 in the bronze medal rematch.

Otherwise, it was not a fun or very productive tournament for Sumter’s three other qualifiers. Juniors Matt Devine (130), Hayden Raabe (145) and Trevor Jahnke (215) all went 0-2.
