Gibbs comes up short at state

B.J. Gibbs came up short in his bid to become Mid-Carolina’s first state wrestling champion and finish with an undefeated record last weekend at the Class 2A-1A state tournament in Rock Hill.

Gibbs, who finished in second place at 215 pounds in M-C’s first season on the mats in 2009, had to settle for a silver medal again this time around. The Rebels junior standout dropped a 3-1 decision to Chesnee’s Marcus Orvalle in the 285-pound title bout to finish with a 36-1 season record. Gibbs beat Orvalle the week before in the Upper State championship match.

The irony here is that Orvalle, a senior, became his school’s first state wrestling champion.

Gibbs pinned Nathaniel Moten of Burke in the first round and pulled out a 4-3 decision in the semifinals against Abbeville’s Jon Mudd.
