Lake Murray soccer tournament starts Friday

The annual Lake Murray Invitational boys soccer tournament, hosted by Irmo, Dutch Fork and Chapin, runs this weekend with a quality field featuring top-ranked Northwestern and No. 2 Irmo.

The mighty Trojans from Rock Hill have won two straight and three of the last fourth Class 4A state championships, downing Irmo in last season’s playoff finale.

Action begins with six matches at the three host sites and continues through Sunday’s championship match at Irmo’s W.C. Hawkins Stadium at 5 p.m.

Friday’s first-round matches include:

At Irmo – Hammond vs. Darlington (6 p.m.); Irmo vs. Greenwood (8 p.m.). At Dutch Fork – Northwestern vs. Dreher (6 p.m.); Dutch Fork vs. Airport (8 p.m.). At Chapin – Augusta Soccer Academy vs. Fort Mill (6 p.m.); Chapin vs. Cardinal Newman vs. Chapin (8 p.m.).

Chapin enters as the third-ranked team in Class 3A, Airport is No. 9 in 3A, while Cardinal Newman and Hammond stand second and third, respectively, in preseason SCISA rankings.

Flight matches continue on Saturday at 9 and 11 a.m. Consolation matches follow at 3 p.m. The three flight winners and one wild card team will advance to the semifinals at 5 p.m. at Irmo and Dutch Fork.
