2A state volleyball playoffs open tonight

The Class 2A state volleyball playoffs begin on Monday night with Midlands entries Keenan, Gilbert and Pelion playing first-round matches at home. Columbia opens on the road at Indian Land.

Keenan went 10-0 to win the Region 3 championship, and beings postseason play against Cheraw at 6:30 p.m. Gilbert (13-5) finished in second place in Region 3, and hosts Central of Pageland to tonight. Pelion, which finished in second place in Region 5, hosts a first-round Lower State match against Hanahan.

Seniors Whitney Strother and Victoria Burkett Williams, junior Kathryn Cochcroft, sophomore Kelsey Hancock, freshmen Jenna Williams and Gabby Keisler and eighth-grader Caitlyn Sheppard comprise Gilbert’s regular rotation.

Veterans Strother and Burkett carry the Indians attack. Strother had 120 kills, as well as 10 blocks, 23 aces and 63 digs. Burkett led the team during the regular season with 184 kills, and also contributed 84 digs and 21 aces.

Williams moved into the key setter role this season and finished with 394 assists was led the team in servicing (95%, 35 aces). Hancock (42 kills, 35 digs, 24 assists and a team high 46 aces) and Cochcroft (82 kills, 12 blocks 37 digs and 38 aces) contributed in a variety of ways. Meanwhile, Keisler chipped in 40 digs and 12 aces and Sheppard had 46 kills and 11 digs.

The Class 4A and 3A playoffs commence on Tuesday.
