Airport notes: The Eagles escaped with a 42-40 win last week in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs when a potential game-winning field goal by Socastee sailed wide right as time expired Airport (9-2) spotted Socastee leads of 14-0 and 28-14 before scoring 28 unanswered points. Still, the Eagles needed fate to intervene to avoid an upset loss In the end, a 19-yard scoring pass from sophomore Sir Sutton to Shay Robinson early in the fourth quarter provided the decisive points. Sutton had two scoring passes and one touchdown run. The other AHS offensive headliner was Davon Howell, who ran for 136 yards on 16 carries and scored three TDs Airport beat Hartsville 28-21 early in the season in the first meeting of the teams in 19 years. The last time the Eagles and Red Foxes clashed in the playoffs, Hartsville came away with a 7-0 decision in the 4A Division II state championship game in 1981.
Hartsville notes: The Red Foxes (8-3) smoked Hilton Head 63-6 in the school’s Class 3A state playoff debut. Hartsville has been a 4A school since the classification debuted in 1968. In fact, the Foxes squared off against Edmond (now Sumter) in the inaugural 4A title bout Hartsville is riding a seven-game winning streak that included a 5-0 run through the Region 6 campaign Leading rusher Ernest Wallace ran for 105 yards last week, and opened the scoring with a 56-yard touchdown run. Though passing is not a big part of the Red Foxes’ MO, Trey Gattison had three catches for 101 yards and two TDs vs. Hilton Head.
Playoff history: Airport sports a 22-23 state playoff record through the years. The 1981 title bout vs. Hartsville remains the Eagles’ only championship game appearance Hartsville stands at 38-20 in state playoff games since 1970 with seven championship game appearances and three state titles on the books.
