Richland NE notes: The Cavaliers (7-4) nailed down a playoff wild card berth with a 27-22 win over archrival Spring Valley last week. RN led 27-0 at halftime, but the Vikings made things interesting after the break. ... The Cavs will take part in the Class 4A state playoffs for the 16th time in the last 17 seasons A.C. Whaley is healthy again and has taken over the starting quarterback job. The RNE option-based attack receives balanced contributions from runners Darius Paulk (152-1030-8), La’derrick Cohens (106-383-8), Chavarius Curry-Felix (58-314-8) and Domineke Albert (62-305-3). Curry-Felix has also hauled in three of the team’s five scoring passes Ryan Quarles and Chris Reeder are the top hit men on defense with 101 and 83 tackles, respectively, while Ronnie Hopkins leads the team with eight sacks and Reeder and Ricky Reesxe share the club lead with three interceptions.
North Augusta: The Yellow Jackets secured the Region 5 championship ansd posted the best regular-season record (10-1) in program history in the modern era since 1970) NA is productive by land or air. Demarcus Rouse (143-732-8), QB Lorenzo Hammonds (113-569-10) and Vinny Miller (64-443-4) share the load on the ground. Hammond is 148-for-200 passing for 1,779 yards and 15 TDs with only two interceptions. In case you hadn’t noticed, Hammond’s completion percentage is at an eye-opening 73%. The top receivers are Montez McGuire (55-821-10) and Jessie Pernell (49-619-5) On the defensive side, Compton Daugherty (113 tackles), Trey Morgan (100 tackles) and Jaylon Myers (54 tackles, 7 intyerceptions) are obvious standouts.
Playoff history: Richland NE stands at 23-26 in state playoffs game, winning a state championship in 1993 under coach Joe Wingard North Augusta is 20-24 in state matters since 1970, and turned in a totally unexpected surge to the 4A Division II title in 1989 under coach Bill Utsey. NA is the only South Carolina team to ever finish the regular season with a losing record and go on to win a state championship.
