SPARTANBURG AT IRMO
Spartanburg notes: The once mighty Vikings have fallen on hard times of late. Spartanburg is 17-31 over the past four seasons Still, Freddie Brown’s team cannot be dismissed out of hand. In fact, the Vikings, fresh from a dismal 3-8 regular season showing, won back-to-back road games in the Class 4A Division I playoffs before being eliminated in the semifinals Things have been a bit better this season. The Vikings (5-6) have a solid passing game featuring QB Adrian Kollock (98-206-1307-13) and WR Daquan Fuller (46-651-9) The defensive leaders are Demasio Williams (94 tackles, 8 TFL, 6 sacks) and Simeon Byrd (65 tackles, 9 TFL, 5 sacks).
Irmo notes: The Yellow Jackets (9-2) fell to archrival Dutch Fork last week in the regular season finale/Region 4 championship game. Regardless of what happens in the playoffs, Irmo will have no worse than a nine-win season for the ninth year in a row Irmo’s attack centers on the running skills of Dawan Scott and Marcus Smith LB Nolan Dorton is the Jackets defensive leader.
Playoff history: Spartanburg has one of the great playoffs report cards in South Carolina. Since 1970, the Vikings are 55-31 in postseason matters with five state titles. But since the last championship in 2001, Spartanburg is 4-7 in the playoffs Irmo has made the cut for the 33rd consecutive season. The Yellow Jackets modern era postseason record is 35-36 with one state title in 1980. The unusual aspect is no other team with at least 71 postseason games on the books has a winning percentage below .500.
