Brookland-Cayce enters Tuesday boys basketball season opener at Columbia with high hopes of improving on last season’s 8-13 record.
The Bearcats welcome back three starters, including all-state senior Jonathan Rumph who averaged 18.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists last season. The other returning vets are junior point guard Curtis Barber (8.0 ppg) and Tevin Lytes (6.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg).
“We hope to combine our returning experience with our size and quickness and challenge for the region title,” said B-C coach Ricky Bouknight, who is in his 11th season in command.
“We haven’t had this kind of size in quite a while.”
Michael Lieberman, who averaged 3.7 points and 2.5 rebounds a year ago, is expected to big a much bigger contributor this time around.
The Region 5-3A lineup is even tougher with the addition of traditional power Lower Richland, A.C. Flora and Chapin. The holdovers from a year ago include B-C, Airport, Dreher and Midland Valley.
