Notebook: 5-3A girls basketball

Unbeaten Airport and Lower Richland kept pace atop the Region 5-3A girls basketball standings with wins on Tuesday night.

Fresh from a championship run at the Midas Highlander Classic tournament, Airport (10-0, 3-0) ran past Brookland-Cayce 51-27 behind the scoring of Jessica Ellison (17 points) and Taylor Vinson (12).

Vinson was named the tournament MVP and scored 18 points in the Eagles 43-30 win over Heathwood Hall in the championship game. Julia Muldrow joined Vinson on the all-tournament team.

Kacie Silver scored 12 points for the Bearcats, who fell to 2-12 overall, 0-3 in the region.

Lower Richland (10-3, 3-0) humbled Dreher 62-47 behind the balanced scoring of freshman Breshay Johnson (13 points), senior Bea Williams (12) and junior Justice Nathan (11). The Diamond Hornets have won seven of eight since dropping a 28-24 decision to Blythewood on Dec. 7.

Kaydra Duckett tallied 20 points for the Blue Devils (4-6, 1-1).

Elsewhere, Chapin fell to 0-3 in region matters after taking a 51-45 hit at Midland Valley. Shaleighya Sulton led the Eagles with 12 points.

On Friday, Midland Valley (1-1) travels to face A.C. Flora, which hasn’t played since Dec. 23 when its lost to Lower Richland in a consolation game at the Sweet 16 tournament in Orangeburg. In other games, Airport hosts Dreher and Chapin is at Brookland-Cayce. LR has the bye.
