It will be an all-Region 3 battle in Greenville on Saturday when Columbia takes on city rival Keenan in the Class 2A girls basketball Upper State championship game.
The surprising Raiders set up the all-Midlands showdown at the Bi-Lo Center by upending Region 2 champion Broome 58-55 on the Centurions home floor on Tuesday. It was the third straight playoff road triumph for Keenan, which finished in third place in the final region standings after being swept by co-champions Columbia and Eau Claire.
Keenan (18-8) power to a big early lead, led by 21 points at halftime and carried a 16-point advantage into the final eight minutes of play. Broome boldly climbed back into contention and had a shot at sending the game into overtime on a last-second 3-pointer shot, but the launch was off target.
Sophomore Daisha Eddy led the Raiders with 18 points, and junior center Jocolby Brown chipped in 13. Eddy hit one of two free throws with five seconds remaining, which assured that the Raiders could not be beaten by a last-second shot.
Keenan beat Broome in the US finals on the way to the state championship in 2008.
