Dutch Fork earned yet another shot at top-ranked, undefeated Spring Valley. The Silver Foxes advanced to the Class 4A Upper State championship game and a third confrontation with the Vikings by way of a 57-34 rout of host Greenwood in a third-round game on Tuesday.
Simply put, 6-foot-4 sophomore Alaina Coates overwhelmed the host Eagles. Coates finished with 23 points, 19 rebounds and seven blocks to lead Dutch Fork (24-2) back to the state semifinals for the seventh time since 2002. Coates hit on 10 of her 13 shots from the field, and went 3-for-4 at the free throw line in her latest scintillating performance.
Donnesha Shuler also had a double double – finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore was 7-for-9 from the field, but managed to convert just two off 11 free throws. Shuler also was credited with four assists and two steals.
The odd thing about the game was DF shot an impressive 58% from the field, but was a dismal 6-for-21 at the line.
Dutch Fork vs. Spring Valley III will be Friday in the Low State championship game at The Citadel’s McAlister Field House. Spring Valley swept the Silver Foxes during the Region 4 campaign, prevailing 71-53 on Jan. 15, and 49-40 in the Feb. 1 rematch.
