The 2011 softball campaign at Lugoff-Elgin is a season of change. The Demons are moving up in rank to Class 4A with membership in tough Region 4.
Coach James Marlow has seven regulars returning from a team that went 11-9, shared a region championship with Chapin and advanced to the Class 3A state playoffs.
“We have five senior starters, and they should provide for strong leadership,” said Marlow. “However, our pitching is young and we will have to play very well defensively in order to compete a championship level. We look forward to the challenges ahead of us this year.”
The veteran base features senior SS Amanda Burr, senior C Savannah Corder, senior OF/1B Tyler Kirkland, senior P/OF Jessica Koumas, junior 2B/OF Chelsea Bradford, sophomore P/2B Alexis Blakeney and senior 3B/DH Jessica McCaskill.
Marlow said his impact newcomers include freshman CF Taylor Rawl, sophomore P/OF Meagan Owens and freshman 3B Kelsey Griham.
Senior 1B Felecia Dykes, sophomore OF Ashley Martin and freshman 2B Dallas Gurrero are also expected to contribute.
L-E opens the regular season and makes in 4A region debut on March 8 at Richland Northeast.
