Airport softball returned to relevant status in 2010. The Eagles went 20-6, shared the Region 5-3A championship with Brookland-Cayce and made it to the Sweet 16 level of the state playoffs, losing in the district championship round to eventual Lower State winner Darlington.
The Eagles, however, may find it difficult matching that performance this time around. Though five starters and seven regulars return, graduation losses were significant. The biggest loss being veteran pitcher Lauren Phillips, an all-state selection last season, and heart-and-soul shortstop Whitney Brown.
Haley Grimoskos is slated to assume the bulk of the pitching shores. She was 3-1 with a 2.12 ERA in the circles last season. In the lineup, Grimoskos earned all-region honors by hitting .316 with 14 RBIs.
The rest of the veteran cast includes Shanieka Staley (.397, 18 R, 14 RBI), Taylor Payne (.268, 13 R, 10 RBI), Kelly Farmer (.283), Kandice O’Neill, Anna Willbourne and Katie Sams.
Things will be even tougher in the region this season with the addition of Top 10 Chapin to the fold.
