Richland Northeast gave Lugoff-Elgin a rude welcome to Class 4A baseball on Tuesday, downing the reigning Class 3A state champion Demons 7-3 at Optimist Field in the Region 4-4A opener for both teams.
It was the first win of the season for the Cavaliers, who went 0-4 at the preseason Carolina Ale House Classic tournament.
Senior Jason Washburn improved to 1-1 on the season with a solid five-inning start. Senior Jason Mohn put the verdict on ice with a dominant two-inning, six-strikeout relief performance.
Senior catcher Domineke Albert was the RNE offensive star, going 4-for-4 at the plate.
Washburn was the only Cavalier named to the CAHC all-tournament team.
Albert and Washburn headline the veteran returning cast, which also features seniors Jason Mohn OF-P), Justin Voelkel (OF-P), and Shawn Carrion (OF) and sophomore infielder Kevin Fulmer.
Junior pitcher Daniel Mercer, who missed most of the 2010 season with an arm injury, and versatile junior Jarael Jenkins, who sat out last season, are expected to be key contributors.
RNE went 9-15 last season, and failed to make the state playoff cut.
