Lower Richland and A.C. Flora each won two games in Region 5-3A basketball action on Tuesday, while two slumping Airport teams fell at Midland Valley.
The third-ranked LR boys (13-6, 8-0) ripped Brookland-Cayce 81-51 as Edward Stephens erupted for a career-high 37 points. Eric Eaves was the only other Diamond Hornets man in double figures with 13 points. LR is 6-1 in January and enjoys a two-game lead in the region championship race (over A.C. Flora and Dreher) with four conference games left to play. Dominique Hollman dropped in 25 points for the Bearcats (5-15, 1-7).
The fourth-ranked LR girls (13-3, 7-1) tuned up for Friday showdown with No. 1 Dreher by whipping the hapless Bearcats 74-11.
A.C. Flora swept Chapin on the road. Matt Howard (18 points), Wilford Roach (15), Keyon Hilton (10) and freshman Rion Davis (9) led the scoring parade for the Falcons boys (12-8, 6-2) who have won four in a row and are 5-1 in region matters since the holiday break. Tony Dargan tallied a game-high 30 points for the Eagles (5-11, 0-8) who have lost seven in a row. In the opener, 10th-ranked Flora (15-5, 5-3) secured its grip on third place behind Dreher and LR with a 47-42 win. Simoy Evans (16 points, 9 rebounds), Haniyyah Howard (13 points, 8 rebounds), Regan Tapp (12 points) and Kyeshia Dawkins (2 points, 7 assists, 3 steals) all figured prominently in the win. Rebekah Muir (14 points) and Shaleighya Fulton (12) led Chapin (9-9, 4-4).
Midland Valley defeated Airport’s boys 53-44 to drop the Eagles to 10-9 overall, 4-4 in the region. Airport is 1-4 in conference play since getting off to a 3-0 start. Bradley Knotts and Manny Polston led the Eagles with 13 and 10 points, respectively. MV handed the Airport girls (7-12, 2-6) their sixth straight loss. The Mustangs broke open a close game with a 17-8 burst in the third quarter. Vi Mullen scored 10 points for the Eagles.
