Playoff roundup: Second-quarter play carries Ridge View boys; Chapin girls advance

The Ridge View boys basketball team hardly looked like the No. 1 team in the state during the first quarter of Saturday’s second-round playoff game.

The second quarter was another story.

The Blazers outscored Boiling Springs 30-2 in the second quarter on their way to an 87-64 win in the Class 5A Division I playoffs.

Ridge View will host Dorman on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the third round. The game will feature two of the marquee programs in the state with two teams combining for 11 state championships since 2017.

It will be the first meeting between RV and Dorman since 2021 with the Cavaliers winning, 60-51. Dorman holds a 3-0 all-time advantage in the series.

“Dorman is another championship-level program, and coach Ryan knows what he is doing. Should be a good game here Tuesday,” Ridge View coach Joshua Staley said. “... It is healthy for grassroots basketball in the state of South Carolina. It is going to be good for the state. We are excited.”

DJ Wylie led four Ridge View players in double figures with 21 points. RJ Davis added 14 points, Talan Staley 13 and CJ Moore 12.

It was the Blazers’ first game in eight days after they had a bye in the first round. The time off showed early as Boiling Springs brought energy and execution in the first quarter to lead 24-12.

But Staley told his team not to panic, knowing it had three quarters left to play. The Blazers didn’t panic and blitzed the Bulldogs with a variety of suffocating defense, high-flying dunks and outside shooting.

Ridge View erased that lead quickly in the second quarter and took a 31-25 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Wylie and Talan Staley. The Blazers hit 13 3-pointers in the game.

“That was one of the best quarters of the year we had,” Wylie said. “We just kept playing hard and played good defense. That kept us in the game, and we were able to get up.”

Chapin girls’ surprise season continues

The Chapin girls basketball team continued its upswing under first-year coach Terence Jones.

The Eagles used a strong fourth-quarter to defeat Lugoff-Elgin, 50-40, in the second round of the Class 5A Division II playoffs. Chapin heads to Goose Creek in the third round on Tuesday.

“This is big, but it is something we talked about in the summer time when I took over,” Jones said. “We just wanted to change the mindset and the culture here. We wanted to compete for the region championship, finish in the top three and make a run in the playoffs. So far, we have done a good job.

Jones is in his first year at Chapin after a successful run at Denmark-Olar where the team played for three straight Class A state championships from 2022-24.

That success has rubbed off on the Eagle program. It is the first time in more than 20 years that the Eagles have made it to the third round of the playoffs. Chapin’s 16 wins this season are the most since the 2008-09 season.

Sami Stephenson led Chapin on Saturday with 14 points. Alaya Douglas had 13, and Mary Ann Woods added 10. Douglas’ 3-pointer at the end of the second quarter gave Chapin a 29-18 lead at halftime.

L-E trimmed the lead to 33-31 in the fourth quarter. But Stephenson and Douglas answered with back-to-back baskets that pushed the lead back up to 37-31 with 5 minutes, 31 seconds left.

Teryn Hobson led L-E with 19 points. The Demons defeated St. James earlier in the week for their first playoff win in more than 20 years.
