Ridge View ended its losing streak to Blythewood in dramatic fashion.
Sophomore Nick Lawyer hit a 26-yard field goal as time expired as the Blazers scored 16 points in the final 3:26 to defeat the Bengals, 23-21, on Friday at Richland District 2 Stadium.
The loss snaps Ridge View’s 12-game losing streak to Blythewood.
“The kids never gave up. That is a sign of a team that wanted it,” Ridge View coach Perry Parks said. “That was fate. We are grateful and appreciate it.”
Trailing 21-14, quarterback Jalen Smith hit Tre’ High on a 46-yard TD pass to make it 21-20 with 1:41 left. Parks gambled and went for the win, but Sekwan Jenkins stopped running back Ali Kelley.
Blythewood recovered the onside kick, and just had to run the clock out, because Ridge View had no timeouts left. But Blazers senior Dejuan Warren stripped quarterback Jordyn Adams, and the Blazers recovered at the Bengals’ 42 with 58 seconds left.
After a completion, Smith ran it eight yards, and Blythewood was called for a personal foul to move it to the 14. Blythewood committed 18 penalties for 197 yards.
Ridge View ran another play, and Smith spiked the ball and the clock ran out. But referees said there was still 1 second left.
Lawyer then drilled the game-winner as Ridge View improved to 2-0 on the season.
“It means everything to me and my team. This is what you live for. You love it,” Lawyer said.
Warren’s strip of Adams gave the Blazers the ball back with 58 seconds left and a chance to win it.
Dejuan Warren: Came up with the strip of Adams to set up game-winning FG.
Damani Staley: Ridge View defensive end and Gamecocks commit had nine tackles, six for loss and two sacks.
Sekwan Jenkins: Blythewood defensive back had 11 tackles, two pass break-ups
2: Number of Ridge View wins over Blythewood, the other coming in 2007
197: Blythewood’s penalty yards, second week Bengals had more than 100 yards in penalties.
