Charlotte Motor Speedway is one of four locations that could host the summer edition of X Games from 2014 to 2016, and locals are making a final push to get people to vote in a social media campaign introduced by X Games organizers.
The speedway was in third place last week with more than 7,700 votes, according to the X Games Facebook page. Detroit, Mich., has more than 20,000 votes, and Austin, Texas, has more than 12,500. Chicago has roughly 800 votes.
Also, more than 1,000 people have signed the speedway’s online petition to lure the games here. ESPN is expected to decide the winning location later this month.
As a way to boost awareness about the push to host the X Games, the speedway on June 11 created an impromptu skate park and invited local skaters to show off their skills during a four-hour event.

More than three dozen skaters – some from as far away as South Carolina and the Lake Norman area – participated to show support.
The speedway also hosted an event June 4 with Travis Pastrana – one of the most decorated athletes in the history of action sports – who touted the speedway as a perfect fit for the pinnacle of extreme sports contests.
“Charlotte is the motor racing capital of the world,” said Pastrana, a 17-time X Games medalist turned NASCAR driver.
“Coming (here) would take action sports to a whole new level. These facilities are amazing. They’ve got everything in place,” said Pastrana. “I think this is just a perfect fit.”
Dave Mirra, also at the media event and one of the X Games’ most decorated athletes with 24 medals, agreed.
“Charlotte is an unreal city and would make an awesome host for X Games, considering it’s in my backyard,” said Mirra, who has won X Games competitions on everything from a BMX bike to a high-powered rally cross car.
“I’ve been proud to call North Carolina my home for more than 10 years.”
