Newberry College linebacker Edmond Robinson was selected Saturday in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.
He was taken with the 15th pick of the final round, or No. 232 overall pick. Robinson was the first NCAA Division II player taken in this year’s draft.
The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Robinson was Newberry’s leading tackler on the season with 68 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, five pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and a quarterback hurry.
Robinson, from Wadmalaw Island, is the first Newberry alumnus selected in the NFL Draft since 1974, when Greg Hartle was taken No. 251 overall pick in the 10th round by the then-St. Louis Cardinals.
Newberry has three other former players in the NFL: tight end Brandon Bostick, Minnesota; cornerback Ron Parker, Kansas City; and wide receiver Corey Washington, New York Giants.
