'Heartstopper Forever' Movie Recasts [Spoiler] in Shocking Onscreen Change
The Heartstopper movie is almost here but it is going to look a little different after the news of a key role being recast.
Netflix confirmed on Friday, April 17, that Kit Connor and Joe Locke are returning alongside Yasmin Finney, Will Gao, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Rhea Norwood and more. The movie will also welcome new faces: Derek Jacobi and Anna Maxwell Martin. The latter will be taking on the role of Nick's mother, Sarah, after Olivia Colman was unable to return for Heartstopper Forever, which airs in 2026.
"I am so excited that so many of Heartstopper's cast have returned and will appear in the feature film finale. It is a delight to introduce two new members of the Heartstopper family - two icons of British stage and screen - Anna Maxwell Martin as Sarah Nelson and Derek Jacobi in a cameo role," creator Alice Oseman announced in a statement.
Oseman addressed the surprise onscreen shakeup, adding, "When beginning to work on the Heartstopper Forever screenplay, I knew how important it was that Sarah, Nick's mum, appeared in the story. Since season 1, we have seen how close Nick is with his mum - she's one of the few people he can turn to in moments of crisis. While in season 3, we were able to tweak the story to avoid any appearance of Sarah, it felt nonsensical for her to be absent from this final chapter, given some of the emotional struggles Nick faces."
The statement continued: "Sadly, Olivia Colman was not able to join us for the film, so we made the very difficult decision to recast the role, rather than exclude the character. We are deeply grateful for Olivia's beautiful performance as Sarah in seasons 1 and 2 of Heartstopper, through such iconic moments as Nick coming out as bisexual, and we know that her performance will live on in the hearts of every Heartstopper fan."
Oseman issued a message specifically to Martin, adding, "We are overjoyed to welcome the incredible Anna Maxwell Martin into the role of Sarah for Heartstopper Forever. Anna perfectly embodies Sarah's gentle, down-to-earth energy, and it was magical to witness her scenes with Kit Connor during the film shoot. I can't wait for Heartstopper fans to experience her interpretation of Sarah Nelson."
Heartstopper, which is based on Oseman's graphic novels, focuses on high school athlete Nick (Connor) as he starts to question his sexuality after developing a friendship with fellow student Charlie (Locke). The show premiered in 2022 and ran for three seasons.
According to Netflix's Tudum, the upcoming film will follow Nick and Charlie as the fictional couple "confront the challenges of a long-distance relationship - Nick preparing for university, and Charlie gaining independence at school. "The other characters who have been featured on the show will get their journeys wrapped up as well.
Connor and Locke will also serve as executive producers on the feature. Oseman wrote the screenplay for the movie based on the upcoming Heartstopper: Volume 6 novel while director Wash Westmoreland joined the project, which has already wrapped production.
Heartstopper is currently streaming on Netflix.
