Fading cruise dining tradition lives on aboard Carnival cruise ships
As Carnival and other cruise lines evolve their dining programs to meet the preferences of today's cruise vacationers, it may seem like cruise dining traditions like slow-paced meals and shared tables have completely faded out.
Recently, Carnival Cruise Line answered passengers' requests for quicker cruise dinners with a new Express Dining program aimed at delivering a full dinner experience in under one hour rather than the traditional, leisurely paced meal. Express Dining is available with Carnival's Your Time Dining option, which allows passengers to eat in the main dining room at any time during dinner hours as an alternative to traditional set dining times.
Although these modern dining options appeal to many of today's cruise passengers, they don't entirely replace traditional cruise dining. On Carnival ships, you can still dine at a set time every night and enjoy a slower-paced meal, if you choose.
And while being seated with strangers is less common in cruise dining rooms today, Carnival is keeping the tradition alive for those who want to fully embrace the social atmosphere of a cruise.

Yes, you can still share a dinner table with other passengers on a Carnival cruise
While dining with strangers may not be for everyone, plenty of cruise passengers still enjoy the tradition of sharing a dinner table with other passengers as a way to meet new people on a cruise. Whether you're a solo cruiser or someone traveling with family or friends, you can still be seated with other passengers for dinner on a Carnival cruise, but you may have to request it.
Carnival's brand ambassador, John Heald, is happy to help arrange dining requests via his popular Facebook page. In an April 23 Facebook video, Heald advised passengers who want to sit with others at dinner on a Carnival cruise to contact him five days before the cruise with the following information:
- Your cabin number
- Whether you've selected the early or late dinner seating (table assignments can't be arranged in advance with Your Time Dining)
- Your request to be seated at a table with other passengers
Heald only responds to requests via one dedicated daily post on his Facebook page, so make sure to comment on the open post of the day to submit your dining request.
Carnival brand ambassador offers advice for sharing a table with others
As he shared how he can help passengers with their dining requests, Heald also offered advice for a passenger named Miranda who was eager to meet new people on her cruise and asked for guidance on the etiquette for starting conversation at dinner.
"The best advice I can give you is: sit there, just look at the people that you're meeting, say hello, my name is Miranda, and…just be you. It will all happen naturally, I promise. You'll sit there and someone will say, is this your first cruise? And then somebody will say, what deck are you on? And it will just be conversation," Heald said.

As brand ambassador for a cruise line that's all about fun and community at sea, Heald encourages passengers to embrace the opportunity to meet new people and make friends on board.
"There are, and I mean this conservatively, hundreds of thousands of people who have cruised with us over the years and who have made new friends and whose friendship has lasted for a long, long time and then even still cruising together," Heald said. "So, I think it is still a wonderful thing that, if you can, you get a chance to meet new people and to become friends with them, not just for the cruise, but for beyond as well. Let me know if I can help with that."
