‘Quite a fun ride’: One of Columbia’s first craft breweries has closed
A brewery and taproom that has been operating in Columbia for the better part of a decade has closed its doors.
Swamp Cabbage Brewing Company, located at 921 Brookwood Drive not far from Williams-Brice Stadium, announced on its website and social media channels that Sunday, Dec. 18, was its last day. It was one of the first craft breweries in Columbia, and had been open for eight years.
“During the COVID pandemic, we thought we had to shut our doors, but you helped us through rough times,” the business wrote to its customers on the Swamp Cabbage website. “However, it has been an uphill battle and we have decided to throw in the towel. We have loved brewing beers, talking about beers, and enjoyed every conversation and cherish the friendships made.”
The craft brewery also bid farewell to customers on its Facebook and Twitter pages.
“Thank you Columbia, SC for the last 8 years,” the brewery posted. “It was quite a fun ride, thank you to all of our friends and all of the amazing people that we’ve met during this time.”
Swamp Cabbage was a forerunner on a capital city craft beer scene that expanded in recent years. It was known for its variety of beers — the American Blonde Ale was a favorite — and for its special events, such as Oysterfest. The business was located in a mostly industrial area of the city, though it was less than a mile from Williams-Brice Stadium.
