Lexington County firefighters responded to a fire at White Knoll High School late on New Year’s Eve.

The fire started in a field behind the school, and was quickly contained by firefighters at the scene, said Capt. Adam Myrick with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

There was no damage to the school building, a spokesperson for the Lexington 1 school district said in a text.

Firefighters at the scene believe errant fireworks being fired off for New Year’s may have caused the blaze.

A video sent in to WIS TV showed a large cloud of smoke rising from a grassy area, even as the sound of fireworks exploding could be heard in the background.
