Sad end to search for missing South Carolina man with medical issues

The search for a missing South Carolina man with medical issues came to a sad end Wednesday, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 9:30 a.m., searchers found Henry Dubose’s body after the 82-year-old had not been seen for days, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The grim discovery was made in dense woods near the intersection of Milford Plantation Road and Camp Mac Boykin Road, according to the release. That’s where Dubose was last seen alive Monday, and is about 1.5 hour walk from Dubose’s home, the sheriff’s office said.

It’s near the Pinewood area of Sumter County, close to the northernmost part of Lake Marion. There was no word if Dubose was alone when he was last seen.

Dubose last spoke with his family Sunday, and was publicly reported missing by the sheriff’s office Tuesday.

Deputies began the search Tuesday night and were joined by officers from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Forestry Commission, along with K-9 teams and drones that used thermal technology, according to the release.

The search continued into the night and on Wednesday morning the searchers reassembled and were organized into four teams to scour the area, the sheriff’s office said. The search continued with ATVs and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s helicopter before Dubose’s body was found.

“We have been praying and searching using every asset at our disposal, but Mr. Dubose had already passed away,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said in the release. “The family has lost a loved one and others have lost a friend. They have our deepest condolences.”

The sheriff’s office said foul play was not suspected in Dubose’s disappearance.

No cause of death was announced, but the Sumter County Coroner’s Office removed Dubose’s remains and an autopsy will be conducted.

Dubose, who lived by himself and did not have a cellphone, suffered from dementia, as well as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, the sheriff’s office said.
