A new park is on the way in Lexington, SC. Here’s where it’ll go.
Lexington residents will see another park open in the fall on a plot of land just outside the town limits along the road to Lake Murray.
The park, currently being constructed on a two-acre spot of open land near the corner of Old Chapin and Old Cherokee roads, is aimed to open in early September, developers of the park told The State. Plans for the empty land include a sheltered picnic area, parking and a fenced-in children’s playground complete with a zip line.
While the land sits just outside the town limits, Lexington Town Council voted Aug. 4 to annex the property into the town.
The land was donated by the Wingard family to the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission to be used for the park in February 2020, Lexington Town Councilman Gavin Smith said ahead of the vote. The park is set to include around 5,000 square feet of structure, which includes the picnic shelter, developers said.
The plot of land owned by the commission totals a little over 16 acres. It’s unclear what the plan is for the other 14 acres of land, which currently sits empty. Officials with the commission did not immediately return a request for comment.
“This park sits directly next to my neighborhood ... and my neighborhood is so excited about this park. I just want to say thank you to the Wingard family,” Smith said during the meeting.
