A major coffee chain has closed one of its Columbia locations in a popular shopping district.

The Starbucks location at 276 Harbison Blvd. in the busy Harbison shopping area northwest of downtown Columbia is closed. It is listed as “permanently closed” on Google and no longer appears on the locations page of Starbucks’ website.

The Starbucks signage had been taken off the building at 276 Harbison when a reporter rode by on Tuesday afternoon, and the windows of the shop had been papered up. The coffee shop was right next door to a Chipotle Mexican Grill, and near a number of other well-known national businesses, including Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, Hobby Lobby and others.

Those who are looking for a Starbucks fix in the greater Harbison area still have options. The company has locations inside Columbiana Centre mall and inside the Target at 134 Harbison Boulevard. There are also freestanding Starbucks locations on nearby Lake Murray Boulevard and Piney Grove Road. In all there are more than two dozen Starbucks shops in the Midlands, per the store locator tool on the company’s website.

While Starbucks is, by far, the nation’s biggest coffee shop company with nearly 17,000 stores across the U.S., it has not been immune to shifts across the economy. The company has closed about 400 locations in the U.S. in roughly the last year, as noted by Yahoo Finance.
