The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help to identify the victim of an apparent drowning.
At about 7:18 a.m. Sunday, emergency services was called to a residence off Songbird Lane near Macedonia Lutheran Church on Lake Murray after a body was discovered in the water, according to a news release.
First responders found a white female floating in about 4 feet of water about 10 feet from shore. The victim is believed to be in her late 60s or 70s. She is about 5’5” in height and weighs about 120 pounds. She has white hair that has been dyed with a reddish tint.
She was wearing a one piece bathing suit with black bottoms and a printed blue top.
The victim had a band aid on her upper left arm, similar to one would get if they had just received and injection, the news release said.
“While we are awaiting the results of an autopsy, we do not believe she was in the water for a long time,” the news release said.
There was no visible trauma to the body.
Sheriff Lee Foster has asked for assistance from the residents of Lake Murray to help in identifying the victim.
“At this point, we do not believe there is any foul play,” the sheriff said. It appears the woman was dressed for a swim and may not have returned to the shore. With the current in the area and the winds, the victim could have come from either Saluda or Lexington Counties as well as developments in Newberry County.”
Anyone with information should call the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office at 803-321-2222.
The Newberry County Water Rescue, Lake Murray Rescue, Newberry and County EMS responded to the recovery. The Newberry County Coroner’s Office, Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and SC Department of Natural Resources are investigating.
