South Carolina man dies while in police custody, coroner says
A South Carolina man was in police custody Wednesday night when he died, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
Justin Taylor, a 36-year-old Aiken resident, is the man who died, Coroner Darryl Ables said Thursday in a news release.
At about 8 p.m., Taylor was being taken to the Aiken County Detention Center after he had been arrested on a disorderly conduct charge, according to the release. Information about where Taylor was when he was taken into custody, and the specific actions that led to the charge, was not available.
When he arrived at the jail, Taylor had suddenly become unresponsive while in the backseat of the Aiken Department of Public Safety patrol vehicle, the coroner’s office said.
First officers, them EMS personnel attempted to resuscitate Taylor before he was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers hospital, according to the release. Taylor died in the hospital’s emergency room at 8:36 p.m., the coroner’s office said.
Neither the manner nor cause of death has been announced, but an autopsy will be performed in Newberry to help make that determination, according to Ables.
Taylor’s death continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. The department of public safety said it asked SLED to investigate the death.
