Mysterious reports flooded in as local businesses wanted answers to why checks worth large amounts of money were being stolen from their mailboxes, Michigan police said.

As investigators looked into the matter, they set up video cameras near mailboxes hoping to catch someone in the act.

That’s when they spotted Darryl Roberts and Brad Stewart on camera swiping outgoing mail from mailboxes, Shelby Township Police said in a Feb. 10 Facebook post.

However, the stolen mail was not contained in Shelby Township. Police said they learned that the two had traveled across six counties and 27 cities in Michigan to steal mail, according to the post.

In total, they swiped nearly $1 million worth of checks during the spree, according to police.

When they were arrested Feb. 4, police found “large amounts” of stolen mail in their vehicle, according to the post.

Both Roberts and Stewart were charged with conducting a criminal enterprise, police said. They’re held on a $250,000 bond.

Shelby Township is about a 30-mile drive north from downtown Detroit.
