Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman honored by SC Senate

The S.C. Senate on Wednesday honored actor Chadwick Boseman who died on Friday from colon cancer.

Boseman was born Anderson in 1976, and starred as the Black Panther in the movie about the Black Marvel comics superhero. He also portrayed Jackie Robinson in the movie “42,” James Brown in “Get on Up,” and civil rights lawyer and first Black Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall in the movie “Marshall.”

Over the weekend, Gov. Henry McMaster ordered flags to fly at half-staff over the State House.

Boseman was diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago, a diagnosis he kept from the public even while working.

State Sen. Darrell Jackson, D-Richland, who offered the resolution, said Boseman, in addition to being a great actor, was also a great humanitarian, citing his work with St. Jude Children’s Hospital and working with kids who had cancer.

“I think legacy the Chadwick Boseman leaves is the power of imagination,” Jackson said. “So many young people now could say you could be from anywhere and you could be a superstar.”
