Driver killed in crash where pickup truck runs off road and flips over, SC cops say

One person was killed Sunday night when a pickup truck crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:50 p.m. in Laurens County, Lance Cpl. Nick Pye said Monday.

A 2002 GMC pickup was driving west on S.C. 14 and it ran off the right side of the road near the intersection with Lynn Avenue, according to Pye. The pickup then hit an embankment, flipped over and the driver died, Pye said

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

Pye said the driver was the only person in the pickup, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the pickup to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through July 7, at least 468 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 12 people have died in Laurens County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
