A man is dead following a crash on a South Carolina, one of 10 people killed over the holiday weekend, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Around 8 a.m. on Sunday, a man in a 2014 Nissan Versa was traveling east on Bush River Road near Rocky Creek Road, about three miles east of Newberry, Sgt. Tyler Tidwell of the Highway Patrol said. He drove off the road and struck a pole and a sign.

The man, the only occupant of the car, died on the scene. The Newberry County Coroner identified him as Nicolas Phillips, 27, of Kinards, WLTX reported.

According to preliminary numbers from the state Department of Public Safety, at least 10 people were killed on South Carolina roadways over the Independence Day Weekend, from July 3-6.

It is three more than Independence Day weekend in 2024, when seven were killed.
