A major road widening project is now underway in the Irmo area. Richland County has begun work to widen a 3.2-mile stretch of Broad River Road from two lanes to five between Dutch Fork Road and Royal Tower Drive, just north of the Interstate 26 interchange.

The project is expected to take up to three years, with construction expected to end around February 2029. Richland County officials say the project will more than double the roadway’s current capacity, and leaders promise the added lanes will also decrease wait times during heavy traffic. An estimated 21,400 vehicles on average drive on this stretch of Broad River Road each day, according to SC DOT data.

New sidewalks between Royal Tower Drive and Woodrow Street, as well as new traffic signals at Royal Tower Drive and Farming Creek Road are also part of the plans.

The project is being paid for with the Richland County transportation tax, often called the penny tax. Richland County officials did not provide a budget amount for the work.
